Our Philosophy

June is not January.

Not all months are equal. You've known this for years. May and a new start line every weekend. The long wait of December on the trainer. The July woods gone quiet. The first cold morning in October when the color turns.

The Gregorian calendar was built for accountants. Twelve months, all the same size, marching along in a tidy row. January gets exactly as much room as June. Very fair. Very orderly. And completely wrong.

You already know which months are which. The ones over in a week that grip you for months. And the ones you mostly wait out.

Every obsession follows the same arc.

The names change. The specific truth changes. The arc does not.

01

The Stir

The longing kicks in before you name it. A temperature. A smell. Something in the light. The season is a long way off. Part of you already knows.

02

The Build

Watching for signals. You know it's too early, but you're reading the forecast and laying out gear you won't touch for weeks. It's not here yet, but you've already started.

03

The Threshold

The first day. The body remembers. Everything theoretical becomes real. You're finally back.

04

The Deep

This is what it was all for. Full presence. The months of waiting collapse into this. You are not thinking about anything else. You are exactly where you spent all year trying to get.

05

The Fade

Still in it, but the edges are visible. Conditions are changing and the only thing you can do is not waste it. Every day counts.

06

The Long Green

The off-season. Quiet. The absence that makes the longing possible again.

The Trough

An honest year isn't all longing and payoff. Every obsessive knows the other stretch. The one that doesn't make pretty pictures. You're ready. It's here. And it won't deliver.

This is the Trough. Not the quiet of the off-season, and not the sweet edge of a season ending. This is the season itself, refusing. The forecast that won't break. The window that won't open. You're standing in it, geared up, with nowhere for any of it to go.

It doesn't belong to a season the way the others do. It goes wherever the year turns against you: before the peak, inside it, or between two of them. A gentle year might hand you one. A cruel one, more than you can count.

The Trough is not the low you rest in. It's the low you fight.

How the year actually feels.

A moment of obsession

Everything else gets out of the way.

We call it an Annual: a year of a single pursuit, printed at the weight it actually carries.

The photograph is not decoration. It is the heart of an Annual: a single charged moment, chosen on purpose. Everything else takes a step back to let it be seen. The dates are still there, every day of the year accounted for, but they run narrow along the bottom edge, functional and almost invisible from across the room. This is the trade an Annual makes, and it makes it deliberately.

An obsessive's year moves in beats. The word is musical, and it fits: a beat is a stretch of time you feel as one thing, and the year is not metered evenly. The intense stretches come fast and crowded: the heart of the season can break into a handful of beats, each its own distinct charge, each gone from the wall in a week or two. The quiet stretches hold a single long note. A whole off-season can rest in a single frame and stay there for months, not because it is empty but because that is how it feels to live it: the long, level calm that rebuilds the wanting.

Each beat is one page. A standard calendar divides the year into twelve equal rectangles and calls it honest. An Annual gives each beat the weight it already has. The arc is a map of a real year.

Made by the obsessed.

Every Annual is made by photographers who have earned their knowledge of the pursuit. People for whom this is not a freelance gig but a way of life. Every one of them is named.

Every Annual has a Curator, a community expert who makes sure the year we drew is the one they know.

Each photographer receives a share of revenue from every unit sold. Not as a courtesy. As structure. We built the economics around it before anything else. We do not profit from their work without them.
